Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Sociology at Florida State University! We’re a thriving department dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Last year we celebrated the 90th anniversary of the department’s founding at the Florida State College for Women. Today we rank among the top 25 sociology departments at public universities in the United States, and our Health and Aging program and our Sex and Gender program were recently ranked among the top 10 in the nation. We have assembled a world-class faculty who are publishing cutting-edge research. Our students graduate with state-of-the-art training in methods, statistics, and important areas of specialization. Florida State is on the move!

We offer three academic degrees: Bachelor of Science/Arts, Applied Masters in Social Science/Applied Masters in Aging & Health, and Ph. D. (with a traditional M. S. degree). Our four major areas of specialization are Health and Aging, Social Demography, Stratification and Social Justice, and Social Psychology. Our faculty members have obtained numerous external grants, are publishing in top-ranked journals, and have received a number of national and local awards for their research and contributions to the discipline. They also serve on the committees of national and regional associations and on the editorial boards of leading journals. Our graduate teaching assistants and faculty have a distinguished record of awards for teaching and mentoring. Our graduates have gone on to teach and conduct research at universities and colleges and to make significant contributions in the public and private sectors.
