Financial Aid
The Department of Sociology makes every effort to provide financial assistance for students seeking the Ph. D. degree. Financial aid possibilities include fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships. Students who receive financial assistance and make expected progress usually receive support for up to five years. Students planning a fall entry date who have very strong records should apply by January 15th to be considered for University and College fellowships, or by February 1 to be considered for departmental funding. Later applications will also be considered, if resources allow.
Departmental Assistantships
The Department of Sociology competitively awards teaching and research assistantships to give financial assistance and to provide students with experience. Awards are generally granted only to students who plan to complete their Ph.D. in the Department. They receive a nationally competitive nine-month salary and a tuition waiver for each term. When an assistantship is offered, the Department expects to fund it for five years if the recipient makes good progress toward the doctoral degree. Criteria for continued funding are based on completing coursework on time (no incomplete grades), grade-point-average, progress in the program, and quality and quantity of work on assistantships (teaching and/or research). Students are evaluated annually, by the Graduate Admissions and Financial Aid Committee, which recommends funding priority to the Graduate Program Director.
