Remembering Estella Scott-Roberts

Estella Scott-Roberts, a 1999 Magna cum Laude graduate with Honors in Sociology, died on October 10, 2008.
After graduation from FSU, Estella returned to the Caymans to become the Officer for Women’s Affairs in the then Ministry of Community Development, Women’s Affairs, Youth and Sports where she was the Coordinator of the Domestic Violence Intervention Training Programme, the National Committee Against Domestic Abuse and the National Policy on Gender Equity and Equality. She later became the first Executive Director of the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, a shelter for abused women and their children, and was active with the Women’s Resource Centre. More than 2,000 people attended a silent march through George Town in the blazing heat to pay tribute to Estella and victims of domestic abuse.
Her professors remember her for her intelligence and her commitment to women’s issues, and everyone who encountered her when she worked in the Sociology main office was charmed by her vivacity.
A foundation bearing her name has been created to combat domestic violence and promote equality of women: esrfoundation@gmail.com
